Let Your Joy
Lead You to Healing
What are your joys? Gardening, traveling, singing, playing the piano? Mine include yoga, dancing, and music. Yoga is not only a joy for me; it is one of my self-healing practices, along with meditation and play. Spending time each day in one, if not more, of our joys is where healing often occurs.

HEALING SHELTER
Intro
Life size “Healing Shelter”
In 1993 the “Healing Shelter,” a large walk-through art exhibit and poetry collection, sponsored by the Behavioral Medicine Department of Hurley Medical Center, in Flint, Michigan, was recognized as an example of Hurley's “Art of Healing” concept.
Hundreds of copies of my poems about emotional healing were given to viewers during the opening reception of this exhibit. The public response to this exhibit was so overwhelming that Hurley later published several hundred books of my poetry, which they gave to patients and staff members who had requested them. At the same time Hurley commissioned me to create a smaller "Healing Shelter" exhibit, now permanently housed in their Cancer Department.
Small prototype of the “Healing Shelter”
In conjunction with the “Healing Shelter” exhibit, Hurley Medical Center invited me to conduct healing workshops to help physically, mentally and emotionally ill patients. Since then, I have worked with thousands of students, ranging from preschoolers to senior citizens, as well as cancer survivors, physically, mentally and emotionally challenged and the homeless.
Today I focus on teaching creativity classes to area schools, women's groups, art and business organizations and in my home studio, as well as speaking to civic groups and churches about the spiritual connection between creativity and healing.
